When deciding what type of phone to get, price is a primary concern for the users.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5S are both very capable and useful smartphones used for everyday purposes. According to Verizon Wireless, a mobile network company, the current full price of the Galaxy S4 is $499.99, while the full price of the iPhone 5S is $549.99. In flat price, the S4 is cheaper by about fifty dollars. However, this doesn't take into account that the S4 has been in the market for longer, so the price has decreased for longer than the 5S has.

The rate at which the price decreases is also a factor that must be considered. Both of the devices had a release price of $649. Therefore, when calculating ((original price - current price)/time on market), the depreciation rate is found. The depreciation rate of the Galaxy is about $8.33 every month, and the iPhone has a depreciation rate of $7.14 every month. Even with the five month difference between the release dates, the iPhone would only have dropped about $35, which would still make the Galaxy S4 cheaper by about $15.

The last factor to be considered is the amount of data that comes with each phone. For Verizon Wireless, the Galaxy S4 only has the option of being sold at 16 GB, while the iPhone has the option to upgrade to having 32 GB of memory for an extra $50. However, microSD cards are sold that are compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S4, and one example is the Centon 16GB, which sells for only $10 in Walmart. Therefore, a customer could theoretically buy the S4 for the $499, and a $10 microSD card, and have the same amount of memory as the $599.99 iPhone 5S, but saving $90. Also, the iPhone doesn't have the capability to use these microSD cards, so in order to expand the amount of memory it has, the full $50 has to be spent.
